Suddenly an explosion causes Gargamel to be catapulted far from his castle, thus saving the Smurfs and Smurf Girls. Unfortunately, Smurfette's sacrifice for her friends ends up reverting her to a lifeless lump of blue clay.

Alur cerita

Di sana, Smurfette tanpa sengaja mengungkap petunjuk tentang topi yang jatuh menuju Hutan Terlarang. Hal itu memungkinkan Gargamel membuat ramuan untuk menemukan desa Smurf lain. Hefty, Brainy, dan Clumsy membantu Smurfette melarikan diri kembali ke Desa Smurf.
Papa Smurf menghukum mereka dengan mengurung di rumah masing-masing. Malam harinya, Smurfette menyelinap keluar untuk memperingatkan desa yang hilang. Hefty, Brainy, dan Clumsy ikut serta dalam petualangan itu.
Gargamel mengetahui rencana mereka dan menyusul bersama Azrael serta burung bangkai Monty. Papa Smurf akhirnya menyadari kepergian mereka dan ikut mencari. Keesokan paginya, kelompok Smurf menyeberangi sungai dengan rakit buatan tangan.
Mereka menyelamatkan Gargamel yang tenggelam, namun Gargamel mengkhianati mereka. Kelompok itu terjatuh dari air terjun. Mereka kemudian diserang dan ditangkap oleh sekelompok Smurf perempuan dari desa yang hilang.
Para Smurf dibawa ke Smurfy Grove. Di sana mereka bertemu Smurfblossom, Smurfstorm, Smurflily, dan pemimpinnya Smurfwillow. Smurfstorm dan Clumsy pergi mencari Gargamel.
Dalam perjalanan, Clumsy tanpa sengaja mengungkap asal-usul Smurfette yang diciptakan Gargamel. Hal itu membuat Smurfstorm tidak percaya pada Smurfette. Sementara itu, Gargamel terjebak di Rawa Tanpa Kembali yang penuh piranha.
Gargamel melihat Clumsy dan Smurfstorm di udara bersama capung Spitfire. Monty menyerang mereka namun kalah. Kembali ke desa, Smurfette mulai menyukai kehidupan di Smurfy Grove.
Smurfstorm dan Clumsy kembali dengan kabar buruk. Para Smurf perempuan mempersiapkan serangan. Gargamel tiba-tiba menyerbu dan menghancurkan Smurfy Grove. Ia menangkap semua Smurf.
Smurfette dilepaskan karena dianggap bukan Smurf asli. Ia menangis di reruntuhan desa lalu mendapatkan ide. Smurfette pergi ke sarang Gargamel untuk menghadapinya.
Di sarang Gargamel, semua Smurf dipenjara. Gargamel menyiapkan mesin untuk mengambil esensi mereka. Smurfette berpura-pura ingin menjadi jahat lagi.
Gargamel mengubahnya menjadi jahat dengan sihir, namun Smurfette justru menyerap kekuatan itu. Ia meledakkan sarang Gargamel. Gargamel, Azrael, dan Monty terlempar kembali ke rawa.
Para Smurf bebas, tapi Smurfette berubah menjadi tanah liat. Kembali di Desa Smurf, para Smurf membuat tugu peringatan untuk Smurfette. Energi cinta dan kasih sayang mereka menghidupkan kembali Smurfette.
Smurfette akhirnya menemukan tujuan hidupnya, yaitu menjadi apa pun yang ia inginkan. Para Smurf merayakan kemenangan bersama.
Pemeran suara
Demi Lovato mengisi suara Smurfette sebagai tokoh utama. Karakter ini digambarkan penuh rasa ingin tahu tentang jati dirinya. Rainn Wilson menjadi suara Gargamel, penyihir jahat yang haus kekuatan Smurf.
Mandy Patinkin menyuarakan Papa Smurf sebagai pemimpin bijaksana desa. Joe Manganiello menjadi Hefty Smurf yang kuat dan penuh semangat. Jack McBrayer menyuarakan Clumsy Smurf yang ceroboh namun baik hati.
Danny Pudi menjadi Brainy Smurf yang cerdas dan suka buku. Julia Roberts menyuarakan Smurfwillow sebagai pemimpin ibu dari Smurfy Grove. Ellie Kemper menjadi Smurfblossom yang energik dan ramah.
Michelle Rodriguez menyuarakan Smurfstorm yang tangguh dan tomboi. Ariel Winter menjadi Smurflily yang pintar dan lembut. Meghan Trainor menyuarakan Smurfmelody yang musikal.
Jake Johnson menjadi Grouchy Smurf yang selalu kesal. Gordon Ramsay menyuarakan Baker Smurf yang ahli memanggang. Tituss Burgess menjadi Vanity Smurf yang sangat peduli penampilan.
Gabriel Iglesias menyuarakan Jokey Smurf yang suka iseng. Jeff Dunham menjadi Farmer Smurf yang bertani. Kelly Asbury sendiri menyuarakan Nosey Smurf yang suka mengintip.
Frank Welker kembali menyuarakan Azrael, kucing Gargamel, seperti di film sebelumnya. Dee Bradley Baker menjadi Monty, burung bangkai yang bodoh tapi ganas.
Produksi
Pengembangan film dimulai sejak Mei 2012 saat Columbia Pictures dan Sony Pictures Animation menyiapkan naskah untuk sekuel ketiga. Rencana film aksi hidup ketiga dibatalkan demi reboot animasi penuh.
Kelly Asbury ditunjuk sebagai sutradara pada Maret 2014. Ia terinspirasi dari film klasik seperti Raiders of the Lost Ark dan The Goonies. Hutan Terlarang dirancang mirip negeri ajaib seperti Oz atau Pandora.
Pada Januari 2015, Mandy Patinkin bergabung sebagai Papa Smurf. Juni 2015, judul sementara Get Smurfy diumumkan bersama Demi Lovato sebagai Smurfette dan Rainn Wilson sebagai Gargamel. Judul diubah menjadi Smurfs: The Lost Village pada Februari 2016.
Casting lain menyusul termasuk Joe Manganiello, Jack McBrayer, dan Danny Pudi. LStar Capital dan Wanda Pictures ikut mendanai. Desain karakter dan lingkungan dibuat lebih setia pada gambar asli Peyo.
Film didedikasikan untuk Jonathan Winters, Anton Yelchin, dan Nine Culliford yang meninggal dunia. Animasi dibuat sepenuhnya dengan CGI untuk menghidupkan dunia Smurf yang penuh warna dan magis.
Musik
Musik latar film dikomposisikan oleh Christopher Lennertz. Album soundtrack resmi dirilis pada 31 Maret 2017 oleh Madison Gate Records. Album berdurasi lebih dari satu jam berisi berbagai trek petualangan.
Meghan Trainor menyanyikan lagu orisinal berjudul "I'm a Lady" yang menjadi single promosi. Lagu "You Will Always Find Me in Your Heart" dinyanyikan Shaley Scott dan menjadi tema emosional. Christopher Lennertz menciptakan skor yang ceria dan epik sesuai nuansa petualangan.
Rilis
Tanggal rilis semula direncanakan Agustus 2015 lalu mundur beberapa kali. Akhirnya film tayang di bioskop Amerika Serikat pada 7 April 2017. Rilis internasional menyusul di berbagai negara.
Versi Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, dan DVD dirilis pada 11 Juli 2017 oleh Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Film sempat tersedia di Netflix dan platform streaming lain. Pada April 2021, hak streaming masuk ke Disney+ dan Hulu melalui kesepakatan Sony.
Penerimaan
Film mendapat ulasan campuran dari kritikus. Rotten Tomatoes memberi rating persetujuan 41 persen berdasarkan 96 ulasan dengan rata-rata 4,8 dari 10. Konsensus menyebut film cocok untuk penonton kecil dan penggemar Smurf berat, meski cerita mudah ditebak dan animasi biasa saja.
Metacritic memberi skor 40 dari 100 berdasarkan 25 kritik, menandakan ulasan rata-rata. Penonton CinemaScore memberi nilai A, lebih baik daripada film Smurfs sebelumnya. Box office domestik mencapai 45 juta dolar AS sementara internasional 152,6 juta dolar AS.
Total pendapatan 197,6 juta dolar AS melebihi anggaran namun dianggap mengecewakan karena kalah bersaing dengan The Boss Baby. Kritikus memuji pesan pemberdayaan perempuan melalui Smurfette. Beberapa menyebut animasi indah namun plot kurang orisinal.
Pada 2018, film mendapat ReFrame Stamp untuk representasi perempuan. Meski demikian, banyak orang tua menganggapnya menghibur untuk anak usia enam tahun ke atas dengan pesan persahabatan dan identitas diri.
Warisan
Film ini menginspirasi serial televisi animasi The Smurfs yang tayang mulai 2021. Serial itu menggunakan gaya CGI serupa dan tayang di Nickelodeon. Pada 2025, reboot animasi baru berjudul *Smurfs* dirilis sebagai kelanjutan semangat seri ini.
