The Smurfs adalah serial televisi animasi fantasi-komedi anak-anak yang diproduksi oleh Hanna-Barbera Productions. Serial ini pertama kali ditayangkan di NBC pada 12 September 1981 dan berakhir pada 2 Desember 1989. Berdasarkan komik Belgia karya Peyo, serial ini mengisahkan kehidupan makhluk kecil berwarna biru yang hidup di desa jamur di hutan ajaib.
Serial ini menjadi salah satu kartun pagi hari Sabtu paling sukses dalam sejarah televisi Amerika. Produksi melibatkan Peyo sebagai pengawas cerita, sehingga tetap setia dengan semangat komik asli. Total terdapat 256 episode yang terdiri dari 417 cerita pendek, ditambah tujuh spesial televisi.

Sejarah Produksi
Pembuatan serial ini dimulai setelah hak siar Amerika Utara dibeli pada 1976. Presiden NBC Fred Silverman melihat potensi karena putrinya menyukai boneka Smurf. Hanna-Barbera kemudian mengembangkan konsep animasi yang menggabungkan elemen komik Peyo dengan gaya kartun khas studio tersebut.
Peyo terlibat langsung sebagai supervisor cerita hingga akhir kolaborasinya. Produksi melibatkan SEPP International S.A. untuk musim awal dan Lafig S.A. untuk musim akhir. Animasi awal dibuat di dalam studio Hanna-Barbera, kemudian melibatkan studio Asia seperti Wang Film Productions dan Toei Animation untuk musim berikutnya.
Serial ini tayang selama sembilan musim. Format berubah di musim kesembilan menjadi tema perjalanan waktu, di mana para Smurf tersesat di berbagai era sejarah. Perubahan ini menandai akhir era klasik sebelum pembatalan resmi pada 1990.
Karakter Utama
Para Smurf hidup damai di Desa Smurf yang terdiri dari rumah jamur. Mereka dipimpin oleh Papa Smurf yang bijaksana dan berjenggot putih. Smurfette adalah satu-satunya Smurf perempuan yang diciptakan Gargamel untuk mengganggu desa.
Brainy Smurf dikenal sebagai yang paling pintar namun sering sombong. Hefty Smurf kuat dan pemberani, sementara Handy Smurf mahir membuat alat-alat. Grouchy Smurf selalu mengeluh dengan kata khasnya “I hate that!”.
Antagonis utama adalah Gargamel, penyihir jahat yang ingin menangkap Smurf untuk membuat emas. Ia dibantu kucingnya Azrael yang licik. Johan dan Peewit kadang muncul sebagai sekutu manusia para Smurf.
Pengisi Suara
Don Messick menyuarakan Papa Smurf sepanjang serial. Ia juga menjadi suara Azrael dan beberapa karakter pendukung. Lucille Bliss menjadi suara Smurfette yang ikonik dengan nada manisnya.
Danny Goldman menghidupkan Brainy Smurf dengan sikap cerewetnya. Michael Bell menyuarakan Handy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, serta Johan. Frank Welker memberikan suara Hefty Smurf dan Peewit.
Paul Winchell menjadi Gargamel di sebagian besar musim sebelum digantikan Michael Bell di musim kesembilan. Lucille Bliss dan Don Messick tetap konsisten hingga akhir, menciptakan kesan mendalam bagi penonton.
