DCinside (Hangul: 디시인사이드), often abbreviated as DC, is an internet community portal and online forum from South Korea. Founded in 1999 as a digital camera information site, the platform has grown into one of the largest and most influential online communities in South Korea, known for its strict anonymity, unique culture, and central role in shaping internet trends and public discourse in the country.
History and Development
Beginnings as a Digital Camera Forum
DCinside was first launched in October 1999 by Kim Yu-sik. Initially, the site served as a specialized community for digital camera enthusiasts, providing a space to share information about camera specifications, photography techniques, and photos taken by users. The name "DCinside" itself is an abbreviation of "Digital Camera Inside," reflecting its original focus.
Transformation into a Giant Community
Entering the early 2000s, DCinside underwent a significant transformation. The site began adding various "galleries" (discussion boards) for topics beyond photography, such as politics, entertainment, anime, games, and lifestyle. This expansion attracted a broader and more diverse user base, turning DCinside from a specialized site into a large general online community. The fragmented gallery system allowed users with highly specific interests to find and interact with one another.
In 2009, DCinside officially stopped providing specialized information about digital cameras, marking the completion of its transition into a general image and discussion community platform. Over time, the site grew into a company named PT DCinside and became one of the most visited websites in South Korea.

The core of DCinside is its "gallery" system. Each gallery functions like an independent message board dedicated to a particular topic, ranging from politics, stocks, and sports to K-pop idol groups and imported snacks. The number of galleries is very large, reaching tens of thousands, reflecting the diversity of users' interests. Each gallery develops its own culture and unwritten rules, although the moderation approach is generally very loose.
Anonymity and Moderation
One of DCinside's most prominent characteristics is its nearly total anonymity. Users are not required to log in or create an account to post or comment, and IP addresses are only partially visible. This environment encourages extreme freedom of expression, but it also becomes fertile ground for trolling, hate speech, and the spread of misinformation.
Although moderation is loose, DCinside has one important feature called the "gae-nyeom-geul" system (meaning "rational post"). This feature highlights and ranks posts that receive the most "likes" within each gallery, so content that is considered high-quality, funny, or insightful has a greater chance of being seen by other users.
Mobile App and Related Platforms
DCinside provides official mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. The apps allow users to access more than 75,000 galleries with features such as push notifications, night mode, blocking of certain words or IDs, image editing, and voice recording for posts. Interestingly, all of these features can be enjoyed even by non-members.
In addition to its main forum, the DCinside ecosystem includes other services such as DCWiki (a user-based wiki) and DC News. The platform also has various user-made extensions, such as "DIBE" (Dcinside Integrated Broadcast Environment), which add extra functionality such as automatic updating of post lists and display of IP information.
Culture and Influence
Hub of Internet Trends and Language
DCinside has become a primary engine of South Korean internet culture. Many popular terms and memes in Korea originated from this forum. The most famous example is the term "Hell Joseon" (Hell Joseon), a cynical phrase describing South Korean society as a place full of hopelessness and gloom, which later spread to mainstream media and international reporting. In the past, phenomena such as "A-Haeng-Haeng" culture and the birth of various iconic characters such as the puppy "Kyejuk-i" were also products of DCinside users' creativity.
Center of Controversy and Extremism
DCinside's dark side is as well known as its cultural influence. Anonymity and a lack of moderation have turned some of its galleries, especially politically oriented ones, into dens for extreme ideology, conspiracy, hate speech, and misogyny. The "Stock Market Gallery," for example, has become a breeding ground for "Dishwashing Theory," a narrative that demeans women and criticizes modern heterosexual relationships, which has also helped drive the anti-feminism movement among young Korean men.
Involvement in Political and Social Events
DCinside has several times been involved in major events. In 2010, users of the site were reported to have participated in a cyber war between Korean and Japanese internet users. More recently and more seriously, the platform was linked to the planning of riots at the Seoul District Court in January 2025, in which supporters of former President Yoon Suk Yeol stormed the courthouse. Users in galleries such as the "People Power Party Gallery" were alleged to have shared courthouse maps and attack plans in real time.
In addition, in August 2025, a bomb threat posted on DCinside triggered a large-scale evacuation at the New World Department Store in downtown Seoul. Although it later proved to be a hoax, the incident showed the platform's power to spread panic and disrupt social order.
International Expansion
Seeing the popularity of Korean culture (K-Culture) around the world, DCinside began opening services for international users, including an Indonesian-language service launched in 2024. This service provides translations of posts about current issues in Korea and offers dedicated galleries for topics such as K-Pop, travel, and Korean cuisine, allowing Indonesian users to interact with Korean content.
Comparison with Other Platforms
DCinside is often compared with global platforms such as Reddit and 4chan. Although Reddit is also a large forum with various sub-forums (subreddits), Reddit applies much stricter moderation in most of its communities and has a strong reputation (karma) system. Meanwhile, DCinside has a greater resemblance to 4chan in terms of anonymity and a "free" approach to content. However, the main difference is that 4chan is considered a niche platform in the West, while DCinside is a mainstream site and one of the most visited in South Korea.
