WhatsApp (short for WhatsApp Messenger) is an internet-based instant messaging and calling application owned by Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). The application is very popular around the world as a means of personal, group, and business communication because it offers ease, reliability, and privacy thanks to an end-to-end encryption system.
History and Development
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by two former Yahoo! employees, Jan Koum and Brian Acton. The initial idea came from a desire to create a communication alternative that was easier and cheaper than SMS by making use of an internet connection. On February 24, 2009, the company was officially registered in California, marking the starting milestone of this application.
WhatsApp's journey reached a major turning point in October 2014, when Facebook acquired it for around 19 billion U.S. dollars, making it one of the largest technology acquisitions in history. In 2016, WhatsApp officially removed the annual subscription fee of 1 U.S. dollar, making it completely free for all users. Today, WhatsApp is used by more than two billion monthly active users in more than 180 countries, making it one of the world's largest communication platforms.

WhatsApp is available on various platforms and devices. For smartphone users, the application supports Android devices with a minimum operating system of Android 5.0 (although starting September 8, 2026, the minimum support will be raised to Android 6) as well as iOS with version iOS 15.1 or later.
In addition to handheld phones, WhatsApp can also be used on various other devices such as tablets (including iPads), desktop computers, and WearOS smartwatches. Users can connect these devices to their main account without needing a continuous connection to the phone.
Main Features
Encrypted Messages and Calls
WhatsApp's main distinctive feature is its security. All private messages, voice calls, video calls, and shared media are protected by end-to-end encryption. This means that only the sender and recipient can read or hear the contents of the communication; even WhatsApp itself cannot access it.
Group Calls
WhatsApp allows users to make voice and video group calls with a capacity of up to 32 people for free. This feature is supported by an internet connection and is designed to work well even on slow internet speeds.
Status Feature
Similar to "stories" on other platforms, the Status feature allows users to share text, photo, video, and GIF updates that disappear automatically after 24 hours. Users can control who can view their status.
Groups and Communities
Users can create group chats to communicate with many people at once. This feature is enriched with administrative controls, such as the ability to determine who can send messages in a group, as well as privacy settings to prevent addition to unwanted groups.

WhatsApp introduced a paid subscription service named WhatsApp Plus that has begun to become available in Indonesia. This service offers exclusive additional features such as the ability to pin more chats (up to 20 chats), exclusive themes, app icon customization, sticker packs, and special ringtones.
Advanced Privacy Features
In 2025, WhatsApp launched an advanced chat privacy feature. This feature allows users to block conversation exports, prevent automatic media downloads, and disable Meta AI inside groups. This aims to give users greater control over their data, especially amid rising concerns about digital privacy.
Alignment of Android and iPhone Interfaces
Toward 2026, WhatsApp began testing new animations on message bubbles on Android devices, which were already present on iPhone. This animation makes messages appear to slide smoothly into the conversation space. Users are also given the option to disable this animation through the settings menu.
Additional Security Features
Various security features have been added to protect users in Indonesia and the world, including two-step verification (PIN), the ability to block and report users, message forwarding limits to prevent the spread of hoaxes, and disappearing messages that automatically vanish after a certain period.
Privacy and Data Collection
Although messages and calls on WhatsApp are private, the application still collects some information from users. The data collected includes phone numbers, profile names, contact information, usage data, and device and connection information. WhatsApp shares some of this data with its parent company, Meta, to help provide, improve, and support the service, as well as for security purposes.
Social Impact and Use in Indonesia
WhatsApp has a significant impact on people's social lives. In Indonesia, which is one of the world's largest WhatsApp user markets, the application is used widely not only for personal communication but also for educational, community, and marketing purposes. A study shows that the intensity of WhatsApp use has a positive correlation with relational closeness, especially between Generation Z and their parents.
Even so, the use of WhatsApp also presents challenges, such as cases of hacking or digital terror that can intimidate users, especially those who are vocal in criticizing certain policies. Therefore, increasing digital literacy and using the available security features is very important.
