Little Charo (Japanese: リトル・チャロ) is a Japanese educational animation series produced by NHK. The series centers on the adventures of a dog named Charo, and is designed specifically as an innovative English-language learning program. Premiering in 2008, the series has produced several seasons with different settings and premises, and has grown into a media franchise that includes video games and various broadcast formats.
Concept and Early Format

Main Characters
The main character in this franchise is Charo (チャロ), a loyal, brave, and kind-hearted puppy. Charo was found alone in a park on a snowy day soon after he was born by Shota, who later became his owner. Losing Shota is the main motivation in his adventure, and he shows a strong determination to return to Japan.
On his journey in New York, Charo is helped by Dread, a one-eyed boxer dog who is tough and experienced on the city streets. The two of them face various obstacles and meet a variety of other characters who help or hinder their journey.
The voice actor for Charo in the original Japanese version is Risa Junna (純名里沙). The narrator for the series is Bill Sullivan, who is also involved in production.

Little Charo (Season 1: NY-hen)
The first season, consisting of 50 episodes, follows Charo's journey from New York back to Japan. The series originally aired on NHK from April 2008 to March 2009. The story begins at the airport and takes viewers exploring various iconic locations such as Chinatown, Chicago, and Broadway, with episode titles that reflect Charo's emotional and physical journey.

The second season continues Charo's adventure, but with a more fantastical setting, namely a world between life and death.
Little Charo: Tohoku-hen (the Tohoku Arc)
In 2012, a different series was released, known as Little Charo: Tohoku-hen or Magical Journey in Tohoku. This season differs significantly because it completely leaves behind the English-language element and focuses more on Japanese culture and mythology, aiming to support recovery after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster. In this series, Charo searches for eight magical stones in the Tohoku region, particularly in the city of Tono, Iwate Prefecture, and meets various mythical creatures from local folklore.
Little Charo 4: Eigo de Aruku New York
In 2013, the series returned to its educational roots with Little Charo 4, which again takes New York as its setting for a new adventure focused on English-language learning.
Media and Broadcast
The popularity of Little Charo has expanded to various platforms. NHK has rerun the series in a re-edited 10-minute format.
The franchise has also expanded into other media. In 2010, Little Charo Premium Collection, a 6-disc DVD set, was released by NHK Enterprise. This collection contains all 50 episodes of the first season, bonus English lessons, and behind-the-scenes interviews.
In addition, a video game titled Eigo Tabi: Little Charo was released for the Nintendo DS console in 2011. The game expands the learning experience with more than 18,000 English sentences, a full voice feature, and interactive minigames, making it a more in-depth learning tool than the television program.
