Angela Aki (アンジェラ・アキ, Anjera Aki), born Kiyomi Angela Aki (安藝 聖世美) on September 15, 1977, is a Japanese pop singer-songwriter and pianist. Known for her distinctive stage appearance—accompanied only by a piano, thick-framed glasses, and casual clothing such as a T-shirt and jeans—she succeeded in capturing public attention with her distinctive vocal sound and capable piano playing. The blend of Japanese and American cultural backgrounds strongly influenced the color of her music and her personality on stage, making her one of the most unique artists of her generation. Since her mainstream debut in 2005, she has released a number of commercially and critically successful albums and singles, including iconic songs such as "Kiss Me Good-Bye" and "Tegami ~Haikei Jūgo no Kimi e~".
Childhood and Background
Angela Aki was born in the small town of Itano, Tokushima Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Her father is Japanese, while her mother is of Italian-American descent. She began piano lessons at the age of three and spent her childhood in Tokushima until sixth grade of elementary school, then moved to Okayama for her junior high school years. She has said that adolescence in rural Japan was fairly difficult because she was once a victim of bullying, and the piano became her escape from loneliness.
At the age of 15, Angela Aki moved to Hawaii to attend high school. She first attended Hawaii Preparatory Academy before eventually graduating from Iolani School in Honolulu. After graduating from high school, she continued her education at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she took a main major in Political Science and Economics, as well as an additional major in Music. It was during her college years that she began to be active in musical activities, joining the campus choir, and even performing at the White House. This multicultural life shaped her into an individual fluent in English and Japanese.
Early Career and Debut
Angela Aki's greatest inspiration to enter the world of music came after she watched a Sarah McLachlan concert in 1997. In 2000, she released her first English-language indie album titled These Words in the United States. After graduating from college, she briefly worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C., but she decided to quit after a year because she could not ignore her dream of becoming a musician. She worked as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant during the day and played music at nightclubs at night to meet her living needs.
In 2003, she decided to return to Japan. An important moment occurred when she watched a Shiina Ringo concert at Nippon Budokan on September 27, 2003; at that time she promised herself that she would also perform on that prestigious stage within three years, even though at that time she did not yet have a contract with any record label. Her career in Japan began to rise in 2005 when she released an indie mini-album titled ONE through the Virgo Music label. This album was a major success and became the number-one best-selling indie album of that year. This success attracted the attention of legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, who then asked her to write the lyrics and sing the theme song for Final Fantasy XII.
Mainstream Success and Peak Career
In September 2005, Angela Aki made her mainstream debut under the Sony Music Japan label by releasing her first single "HOME". The album of the same title, HOME, released in 2006, was a major success with sales of more than 600,000 copies and reached second place on the Oricon charts.
Her fame rose further in 2006 thanks to the single "Kiss Me Good-Bye", which was used as the theme song for the video game Final Fantasy XII. This single succeeded in entering the top ten of the Oricon charts. In the same year, she also released the single "This Love", which became the ending theme for the popular anime Blood+.
The peak of her early career was marked by the achievement of her dream of performing at Nippon Budokan in December 2006. This concert was historic because she became the first artist to perform solo with only piano accompaniment on that stage—without a backing band, backup singers, or an opening act. Her second album, TODAY (2007), succeeded in topping the Oricon charts. Angela Aki was also named one of the artists to appear on the prestigious Kōhaku Uta Gassen for the first time in 2006, and succeeded in appearing on the same program several more times in her career.
"Tegami" and International Recognition
In 2008, Angela Aki released the single "Tegami ~Haikei Jūgo no Kimi e~" (A Letter to My 15-Year-Old Self). This song was inspired by a letter she received from her past self, a project in which she wrote a letter to her future self when she was 15 years old. This moving song was a major success and became one of her most iconic works, even entering Japanese music textbooks and becoming a required song for school choirs. The song brought her back to the Kōhaku Uta Gassen stage in 2008.
Her third studio album, ANSWER (2009), became her second album to succeed in placing first on the Oricon charts. She also held a long national concert tour, with 53 performances, to promote the album. In this period, she was also entrusted with writing and singing the theme song for the NHK morning drama Tsubasa.
Later Albums and Personal Life
Throughout her career, Angela Aki continued to release albums and singles consistently, including LIFE (2010), WHITE (2011), SONGBOOK (2012, a cover album), and BLUE (2012). In 2011, she announced the pregnancy of her first child, and in February 2012 she gave birth to a son. In her personal life, she married Taro Hamano in 2007; the couple later divorced in 2025.
Recent Activity
In 2014, Angela Aki announced that she would temporarily halt her musical activity in Japan and move to the United States to study music. She studied at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music until 2016, then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, together with her family. During her hiatus, she remained musically active by writing songs for other projects, such as for the musical Out of Shadowland at Tokyo DisneySea in 2016, as well as for artists such as May J. and Emiko Suzuki.
After nearly a decade, Angela Aki officially announced her return to the Japanese music world in November 2023. She was involved in the music production for the musical adaptation of the manga and film In This Corner of the World (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni). The main song from that musical, "Kono Sekai no Achikochi ni," was released in February 2024, followed by the album Angela Aki sings 'Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni' in April 2024. In 2025, she began releasing singles from her newest original studio album planned for release in early 2026. She was also involved in composing music for the 2025 thriller film Eugene the Marine.
