Chihayafuru (ちはやふる) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuki Suetsugu. The series tells the journey of Chihaya Ayase, a girl determined to become the best competitive karuta player in the world, in a traditional Japanese card game that relies on memory, speed, and accuracy. The manga has won various awards and has been successfully adapted into various media, making it one of the most iconic works in the sports and shoujo genres.
Synopsis and Main Themes
The story centers on Chihaya Ayase, a high school student who previously had no dream of her own. She meets Arata Wataya, a talented karuta player who transfers to her school during elementary school. Arata introduces Chihaya to the world of competitive karuta and gives her a dream: to become Queen (the title for the best female player in Japan). From that moment on, Chihaya dedicates her life to pursuing that dream.
Together with her other childhood friend, Taichi Mashima, Chihaya forms a Karuta Club at Mizusawa High School. The club is later filled with unique new members, and together they strive to reach the peak of the national competition. Chihayafuru not only explores the joy and tension of karuta matches, but also delves into themes of friendship, teamwork, rivalry, and the complicated love triangle among Chihaya, Taichi, and Arata.

Manga
The Chihayafuru manga was first serialized in Kodansha's BE·LOVE magazine in 2007 and officially ended in 2022 with a total of 49 tankōbon volumes. Its critical success was marked by a win at the 2009 Manga Taisho and the Best Shoujo Manga award at the 35th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2011.
Anime
The anime adaptation was produced by studio Madhouse and directed by Morio Asaka. The series aired in three seasons:
Season 1: Premiered in October 2011 and ran for 25 episodes.
Season 2: Aired from January to June 2013, also consisting of 25 episodes.
Season 3: Aired from October 2019 to March 2020 with a total of 24 episodes.
Although the manga has finished, as of 2026 there has been no official announcement regarding the production of a fourth anime season. The anime adapts around 20% of the overall manga story, which means there is still a great deal of material that has not been brought to the screen. The third season ends at Chapter 53 of the manga, so those who wish to continue the story are advised to read the manga starting from Chapter 54.
Live-Action Films
The series was also adapted into a live-action film trilogy released in Japan in 2016 and 2018. The first two films, titled after parts of poems in the karuta game (Jō no Ku and Shimo no Ku), were released in March and April 2016. The third film, Chihayafuru: Musubi, was even screened in Indonesia at the Japanese Film Festival.
Live-Action Drama Series
In 2025, a new live-action drama series titled Chihayafuru -Meguri- (or Chihayafuru: Full Circle) aired on Nippon Television. This series is not a direct sequel to the films, but an original story set 10 years after the events of the live-action film trilogy. The 10-episode series stars Ami Touma as a new main character, Meguru Aizawa, and also features Mone Kamishiraishi returning to play Kanade Oe from the previous films. Yuki Suetsugu herself was directly involved in the production of this series.

Chihayafuru has significantly increased the popularity of competitive karuta among young people in Japan and the world. Its in-depth depiction of strategy, mental tension, and the cultural aspects of the game, combined with strong character development, makes it a work that is more than just a sports story.
