The 2026 Winter Olympics, officially known as Milano Cortina 2026, is the 25th edition of the Winter Olympic Games, held from February 6 to 22, 2026. The event is hosted in two main cities in northern Italy, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, marking the third time Italy has hosted the Winter Olympics after the 1956 and 2006 editions. This edition of the Olympics is known for a hosting concept spread across the widest geographical area in history, spanning an area of more than 22,000 square kilometers.
Host City Selection
The decision to name Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo as hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics was announced at a session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The concept put forward was the use of existing facilities and the distribution of venues across several mountain clusters, which was considered in line with the IOC's sustainability agenda. Italy succeeded in outperforming other candidates, one of them Stockholm-Åre from Sweden, with a vision of holding an efficient and spectacular winter sports festival in the heart of the Alps.
Concept and Theme
The theme adopted for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics is "Armonia" (Harmony), which reflects the close relationship between urban and mountain areas, as well as Italian society. This concept is not only the theme of the ceremonies, but is also applied in the design of the logo, mascots, and the organization of the Games.
The official logo selected is "Futura," a dynamic and modern design depicting the number 26 as if shifted by a finger across snow. This logo was chosen through an online public vote in March 2021, receiving around 75 percent of the votes from 871,566 voters in 169 countries.
Official Mascots
The official mascots of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics are a pair of stoats (a type of weasel) named Tina and Milo. Tina, with lighter-colored fur, is the mascot for the Olympics, while her younger brother, Milo, with darker fur, is the mascot for the Winter Paralympics. Their names were inspired by the host cities: Tina from Cortina d'Ampezzo and Milo from Milano.
Tina is depicted as a figure born in the mountains, fond of art and music, and caring about nature. Milo was born without one paw, but he uses his tail creatively to overcome the limitation, teaching a message of inclusivity and determination. In addition to Tina and Milo, there are six small companion characters named "I Flo," namely snowdrop flowers that symbolize fighting spirit and rebirth.
Locations and Venues
The 2026 Winter Olympics made history as the edition with the widest geographical coverage. The competitions are divided into four main clusters:
· Milan Cluster (Milan): Serves as the center for ice sports such as Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Short Track Speed Skating, and Ice Hockey. The opening ceremony is held at San Siro Stadium, while the Ice Hockey final takes place at Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena, which has a capacity of 16,000 spectators.
· Cortina d'Ampezzo Cluster (Cortina): Hosts snow sports such as Alpine Skiing (women), Curling, and sliding sports such as Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton at the Cortina Sliding Centre. The opening ceremony is also held simultaneously at Piazza Angelo Dibona in this city.
· Valtellina Cluster: Focuses on Alpine Skiing for men's events at the Stelvio ski center, Bormio.
· Val di Fiemme Cluster: Serves as the location for Cross-Country Skiing and Ski Jumping in Predazzo, as well as Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard in Livigno.
In total, there are 15 venues used for sports competitions, with Verona hosting the closing ceremony at Arena Verona, an ancient Roman amphitheater.
Sports
There are 16 sports disciplines contested at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, competing for a total of 116 events (gold medals). A distinctive feature of this edition is the official debut of Ski Mountaineering (Skimo), which combines the physical endurance of mountain climbing with the speed of skiing downhill.

· Alpine Skiing: A ski race down a slope at high speed.
· Biathlon: A combination of cross-country skiing and shooting.
· Bobsleigh: A team sled race on an ice track.
· Cross-Country Skiing: A long-distance ski race across terrain.
· Curling: A sport of directing a granite stone across ice.
· Figure Skating: A blend of art and technique on ice.
· Freestyle Skiing: Acrobatic action on snow, including the new Dual Moguls event.
· Ice Hockey: A fast team sport with physical contact on ice.
· Luge: A sled race in a supine position, including the new Women's Doubles event.
· Nordic Combined: A combination of Ski Jumping and Cross-Country Skiing.
· Short Track Speed Skating: A speed race on a short track.
· Skeleton: A sled race in a prone position.
· Ski Jumping: A ski jump as far as possible, with the new Women's Large Hill event.
· Ski Mountaineering: An Olympic debut, climbing and descending mountains with skis.
· Snowboarding: Action on a snow sliding board.
· Speed Skating: A speed race on an ice track.
Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics was held on February 6, 2026 in a format that had never occurred before. For the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics, the ceremony was held simultaneously in two cities, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The athletes' parade was also spread across four locations: Milan, Livigno, Predazzo, and Cortina, allowing athletes to participate without having to make a long logistical journey.
The climax of the event was the lighting of the Olympic flame. For the first time as well, two cauldrons (eternal flames) were lit simultaneously; in Milan by ski legends Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni at Arco della Pace, and in Cortina by gold medalist Sofia Goggia at Piazza Angelo Dibona. The cauldron design was inspired by a geometric knot by Leonardo da Vinci.
The event showcased Italy's cultural richness, from fashion by Giorgio Armani, a performance by Chinese pianist Lang Lang in collaboration with Italian opera singer Cecilia Bartoli, to the presence of international singer Mariah Carey performing the song "Nothing Is Impossible".
Controversy and Financial Challenges
Despite success in sporting terms and in the ceremonies, the organization of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics has been overshadowed by financial problems. The initial budget projected at €1.4 billion ballooned to €1.7 billion, causing a deficit of around €310 million. This was caused by construction delays, infrastructure problems, and sponsor and ticket revenue that did not reach targets.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to cover the deficit, emphasizing that full responsibility rests with the local organizing committee and the guarantors, which include the Italian government, the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. The Italian government is estimated to bear half of the deficit. This has triggered tension between the organizing committee and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and the Italian Paralympic Committee (CIP), which feel they have not received the marketing rights payments promised since 2019.
Even so, Italy recorded a brilliant achievement by winning a total of 30 medals, an accomplishment to be proud of amid logistical and economic difficulties.
Winter Paralympics
After the Olympics ended, Italy again hosted the 2026 Winter Paralympics, held from March 6 to 15, 2026. This event recorded record participation from 55 National Paralympic Committees with 612 athletes competing in six sports, including Para alpine skiing, Para biathlon, and wheelchair curling. Great Britain, Latvia, and Slovakia were among the countries that qualified for the Para ice hockey tournament.
