Animation x Paralympic: Who Is Your Hero?

Animation x Paralympic: Who Is Your Hero? (Japanese: アニ×パラ〜あなたのヒーローは誰ですか〜, Hepburn: Ani x Para: Anata no Hīrō wa Dare desu ka?), also known as Animation x Paralympic: Who Is Your Hero? or Ani x Para, is a series of animated short films produced by NHK. This project aims to promote the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and raise awareness of Paralympic sports globally through anime media, which is one of Japan's most recognized popular cultures in the world. The series is a collaboration between NHK and well-known manga and anime creators, as well as real Paralympic athletes, to present authentic and inspiring stories.

Since its first launch in 2017, the series has continued and expanded its reach, even going beyond its original mission of welcoming Tokyo 2020. With a unique and artistic approach, Ani x Para not only educates viewers about the details of various Paralympic sports, but also highlights the fighting spirit, friendship, and determination of athletes with disabilities.

History and Background

The Ani x Para series first aired on November 10, 2017 on NHK General, NHK Educational TV, and NHK World. This initiative was born from NHK's desire to welcome the highly anticipated Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Rather than only presenting documentation, NHK chose to use the power of anime narrative and visuals to touch the emotions of viewers from various circles, including those who may not yet be familiar with Paralympic sports.

Each episode of this series is usually about five minutes long, making it a concise broadcast that is nonetheless dense with message. In addition to being broadcast on television, all Ani x Para episodes can also be accessed for free through the NHK WORLD-JAPAN website, which is available in various languages, so that this inspirational message can reach an international audience.

Format and Characteristics

The main strength of the Ani x Para series lies in its diversity. Not only in terms of the sports featured, but also in the animation styles and narratives used. Each episode is produced by a different mangaka or animation studio, giving a unique and fresh touch to every story. Some episodes are even the result of collaboration with popular manga franchises, featuring well-known characters interacting with Paralympic athletes. For example, the episode covering the sport of goalball features characters from the legendary series KochiKame (Osomatsu-kun) competing against Japan's national goalball team.

Although they are short films, the quality of animation in this series is no small matter. The series is produced by top-tier animation studios such as Nippon Animation, TMS Entertainment, Gallop, and others, ensuring high visual quality for every episode.

Featured Episodes

The following are several standout episodes from the Ani x Para series, which show the scope and quality of the collaboration presented.

The first episode, which aired on November 10, 2017, covered the sport of Football 5-a-side. This episode was handled by Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of the legendary football manga Captain Tsubasa. The story focuses on Japan's national team facing world champion Brazil, showing that the spirit of football transcends all physical limits.

The second episode, which aired on the same day, covered Para-athletics, specifically sprinting. This story was written by Eisaku Kubonouchi, the author of the manga Chocolat, and tells of the struggle of a sprinter who challenges himself to compete at the Paralympics.

In the third episode, which aired on August 25, 2018, the series covered Wheelchair Tennis. This episode is special because it features a real wheelchair tennis athlete, Shingo Kunieda, a four-time Paralympic gold medalist. The story is also a crossover with the popular tennis manga Baby Steps.

The fourth episode, which aired on November 17, 2018, covered the unique sport of Goalball, which was created specifically for athletes who are visually impaired. This episode is also a crossover with the KochiKame series, in which its eccentric characters learn and play this sport.

To welcome the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games, the series also launched episodes themed around winter sports. On February 20, 2022, two episodes were released at once covering Para-Alpine Ski and Para-Snowboard. The Para-Alpine Ski episode features the character Momo Minamikawa, inspired by the real athlete Momoka Muraoka, with character design by Hisashi Eguchi. Meanwhile, the Para-Snowboard episode features the character Mayama, inspired by Keiji Okamoto, with character design by Kazuhiko Shimamoto.

In March 2026, the series reached its 20th episode covering Para Ice Hockey (sledge hockey), a sport often called a martial art on ice. This latest episode aims to popularize that extreme sport and encourage the athletes striving to appear at the 2026 Winter Paralympics.

Impact and Reception

Ani x Para has been highly successful in achieving its goal of promoting Paralympic sports. Material from this series has even been used in an "Activity Kit" by the Japan Foundation to educate students in Australia about the Paralympics, showing the high educational value of this animation series. Anime and manga fans who may not initially have been interested in Paralympic sports have become captivated by the stories and visuals presented. The series has also received a warm reception from the athletes themselves, who feel represented and motivated.

From the critics' side, Ani x Para has been praised for its ability to present disability issues in a positive and empowering way, without falling into a narrative that is melodramatic or full of pity. Each episode focuses on athletic excellence, friendship, and determination, making it inspiring viewing for everyone, regardless of age or background.
