OpenCode

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent software developed to help software developers write, edit, and run code through an artificial intelligence–based interface. The project is managed by Anomaly Innovations Inc. and was launched on April 22, 2025. OpenCode is presented as an alternative to proprietary tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, carrying a philosophy of openness and high flexibility.

History and Development

The project has its roots in the team behind Serverless Stack (SST), founded by Jay V and Frank Wang in 2017 in San Francisco. SST is known as a framework for building serverless applications, and the team received investment support from Y Combinator in July 2021. Names such as Reid Hoffman (founder of LinkedIn), Max Levchin (founder of PayPal), and Steve Chen (founder of YouTube) are also recorded as investors in this development ecosystem.

OpenCode was officially introduced in mid-2025, with its first stable version released on April 22, 2025. In January 2026, the project had collected more than 69,800 stars on GitHub, and that number continued to surge to more than 160,000 stars with 900 active contributors by mid-2026.

Architecture and Philosophy

Unlike its monolithic competitors, OpenCode is built with a client/server architecture that separates the user interface from the processing core. This approach provides greater flexibility in terms of extensibility and the ability to run in various environments. The application is licensed under the MIT License, which allows free use, modification, and redistribution for commercial or personal purposes.

Main Features

Broad Language Model Support

One of OpenCode's main advantages is that it is agnostic toward large language model providers. Users can connect it to various models from providers such as OpenAI, Google (Gemini), and Anthropic (Claude). In addition, OpenCode supports local models run through Ollama or LM Studio, and can be integrated with an existing GitHub Copilot subscription. In total, more than 75 model providers are supported.

OpenCode also provides the OpenCode Zen service, a model optimized specifically for coding tasks, to ensure consistent response quality for users who may not have access to premium models.

User Interface

To accommodate diverse workflow preferences, OpenCode is available in various interface forms:

· TUI (Terminal User Interface): An interactive text-based interface that runs directly inside the terminal.

· CLI (Command Line Interface): A non-interactive mode that accepts commands directly from command-line arguments.

· Desktop Application: Available in a beta version for a more visual user experience, downloadable through the official release page.

· IDE Extension: Integrated with Visual Studio Code and other VS Code–based editors through a dedicated extension.

· ACP Protocol: Supports the Agent Client Protocol for connections to editors such as Zed, IntelliJ IDEA, and Neovim.

Built-in Agents and Automation

OpenCode includes two built-in agents that can be activated easily:

1. build: An agent with full access for development work, able to edit files and run system commands.

2. plan: An agent with read-only access for code exploration and planning, designed to analyze a codebase without the risk of unwanted changes.

In addition, there is a general sub-agent that can be called for complex search tasks and multi-step analysis. OpenCode can also be run automatically in CI/CD workflows on platforms such as GitHub and GitLab.

Extensibility and Protocols

The project is built using industry-standard protocols to expand its capabilities:

· Model Context Protocol (MCP): Allows OpenCode to interact with external tools and data servers.

· Language Server Protocol (LSP): Provides deep contextual understanding of code, such as diagnostics, symbol definitions, and autocomplete, tailored to the project's technology stack.

Ecosystem and Integration

OpenCode Telegram Bot

An open-source project named opencode-telegram-bot allows users to remotely control their local OpenCode instance through the Telegram messaging app. The bot bridges messages from Telegram to an OpenCode server running on a local computer, allowing users to give commands or send files from a phone or other device without having to open a firewall port. This feature includes support for voice prompts (through Whisper), session switching, and model control.

Platforms and Distribution

OpenCode can be installed on various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. Installation methods are highly diverse, ranging from a quick curl installation script, package managers such as Homebrew, Scoop, and Chocolatey, to distribution through Flathub for sandboxed Linux environments. Its presence on Alibaba Cloud Model Studio also shows an effort to reach users in the Asia-Pacific region.

Impact and Reception

OpenCode has become one of the fastest-growing open-source projects in the software development world. By mid-2026, the project recorded more than 7.5 million monthly active users. Its popularity has been partly driven by the cultural shift toward "vibe coding", in which developers use artificial intelligence to efficiently translate nuanced ideas into code. Its competitive advantage lies in the freedom to choose an AI model and its ability to be self-hosted, making it a primary choice for companies with strict data privacy policies.
