BUMP OF CHICKEN (バンプ・オブ・チキン, Banpu Obu Chikin) is a rock music group from Japan formed in 1994 in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture. The group consists of four members who were all born in 1979: Motoo Fujiwara (vocals, rhythm guitar), Hiroaki Masukawa (guitar), Yoshifumi Naoi (bass), and Hideo Masu (drums). Known for the consistency of their quality music and humble attitude, BUMP OF CHICKEN has been one of the most respected and successful music groups in Japan for more than three decades. The group's name literally means "a counterattack from the weak", which reflects the spirit of remaining steadfast and fighting difficulties that they carry in many of their works. They have been under the record label Toy's Factory since their major debut in 2000.
History and Career Journey
Early Formation and Indie Period
The history of BUMP OF CHICKEN began from a childhood friendship. The four members of this group first met in kindergarten and attended school together from elementary through secondary education. Their first performance was in 1994 while they were still in ninth grade, playing The Beatles' song "Twist and Shout" at a school cultural festival. In 1996, their song titled "Danny" succeeded in winning an award at radio station 96TFM, an early significant achievement for them. Officially, the group was formed on February 11, 1996, which was later regarded as their anniversary.
In 1999, BUMP OF CHICKEN released their first independent album, Flame Vein, under High Line Records, which was later followed by a second album, The Living Dead, in 2000. In the same year, they held their first live tour named "Tsuaa Pokiiru".
Rise in Popularity in the Major Era
In September 2000, BUMP OF CHICKEN marked their major debut by releasing the single "Diamond" under the Toy's Factory label. Their first major success came in 2001 with the single "Tentai Kansoku" (Stargazing), which succeeded in entering the Oricon weekly charts and became a turning point in their career. Their first major album, Jupiter, released in February 2002, immediately placed first on the Oricon album charts, affirming their position in the Japanese music industry. At the same time, their songs began to be used as theme songs for various television dramas, films, and anime, which further expanded their popularity.
Throughout the 2000s, BUMP OF CHICKEN continued to release a series of successful singles and albums. The single "Only Lonely Glory" (2004) became their first single to top the Oricon charts. Their fourth album, Yggdrasil (2004), also achieved the same success. They are known for their ability to create songs that last long on the charts and become favorites among various audiences, a distinctive trait that has earned them the nickname of a group with "long-seller" sales. The year 2010 was a special year when they released two singles, "Happy" and "Mahō no Ryōri (Kimi kara Kimi e)", which successively succeeded in reaching first place on the Oricon charts for two consecutive weeks, an achievement last reached by Orange Range in 2005.
Recent Activity and Collaboration Projects
Entering the 2020s, BUMP OF CHICKEN has remained productive and continues to collaborate with various major projects. In 2021, they appeared on the prestigious NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, performing the song "Nanairo", which was also used as the theme song for an NHK morning drama. In 2022, they contributed the song "Chronostasis" as the theme song for the film Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween. In 2024, they released their tenth studio album titled Iris, which was later followed by a large-scale tour covering arena and dome performances with a total audience of 500,000 people. Their latest single, "I", was released in October 2025.

Musical Style and Philosophy
BUMP OF CHICKEN's musical style is generally categorized as alternative rock and pop rock. Their music is often built on strong melodies, dynamic guitar playing, and Motoo Fujiwara's distinctive vocals that are emotional and expressive. The lyrics written by Fujiwara are highly valued for their depth and ability to touch various aspects of human life, from joy and friendship to sadness and self-doubt. Many fans feel connected to the stories they convey through their songs.
One of BUMP OF CHICKEN's unique traits is their principle of not appearing on television. This decision does not mean they are anti-media, but is more a strategic choice to ensure that their music can be enjoyed without visual distraction and remains focused on artistic quality. They are also known for a "low" yet "long-seller" production rate; they release singles with a frequency that is not too high, yet every release is always anticipated and has a long life on the charts. This philosophy has instead built credibility and deep respect from fans and music critics, so that they are regarded as one of the pioneers of the trend of Japanese rock bands that do not depend on television appearances.
Band Members
All four members of BUMP OF CHICKEN come from Sakura, Chiba, and were born in 1979, which created a very strong bond of friendship from childhood. The group uniquely does not have a leader, because they uphold the principle of equality among all members. The following is a brief profile of each member:
Motoo Fujiwara (藤原基央), born April 12, 1979, is the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and the main lyricist and composer for almost all of BUMP OF CHICKEN's songs. He is known as a mysterious figure who is rarely seen in public, yet through his music he is able to convey very deep emotion. In addition to making music, he is also talented in the visual arts and has created illustrations for the album covers of The Living Dead and Yggdrasil. In August 2020, Fujiwara got married.
Hiroaki Masukawa (増川弘明), born December 20, 1979, is the lead guitarist and often fills in backing vocals. Within the band, he is known by the nickname "Hiro" and has a role in creating hidden humorous songs that become "inside jokes" on their albums.
Yoshifumi Naoi (直井由文), born October 9, 1979, is the bassist who also contributes backing vocals. He has the nickname "Chama", taken from a wordplay on "Obotchama" (a rich person's child). Naoi came under media attention in September 2020 due to reporting about his personal life, which later led him to issue an apology and take a break from musical activity. He officially rejoined the band in June 2021.
Hideo Masu (升秀夫), born August 10, 1979, is a reliable drummer and the backbone of the band's rhythm. Compared with the other members, he is the figure who speaks least in public, yet his drum playing is vital in building the dynamics of BUMP OF CHICKEN's songs.
