The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the 23rd edition of the men's intercontinental football tournament organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). This edition marks a significant change in the history of the competition with the expansion of the number of participants from 32 to 48 teams, making it the largest World Cup tournament ever held.
For the first time in history, the World Cup is jointly hosted by three countries in North America, namely the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with a total of 104 matches spread across 16 cities in the three host countries.
New Format and Rules
The most fundamental change at the 2026 World Cup is a completely revised competition format. With 48 participating teams, FIFA decided to divide the teams into 12 groups of four countries each, unlike the 8-group format used since 1998.
The top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the knockout stage, plus the eight best third-placed teams, which also advance to the next phase. This system creates a longer knockout phase, in which teams must pass through a round of 32 before entering the round of 16, unlike previous editions that went directly into the round of 16 after the group stage.
The total number of matches increased sharply from 64 to 104 games. The duration of the tournament also lengthened to around 39 days, with the final scheduled to take place on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey.
Before deciding on the format of 12 groups of four teams, FIFA had considered a format of 16 groups of three teams each. However, that format was feared to create the potential for collusion or "playing it safe" matches among teams, so the more competitive format was ultimately chosen.
Hosts and Venues
The 2026 World Cup is the first edition hosted by three countries at once. The United States is the main host with 11 host cities, while Canada holds matches in two cities and Mexico in three cities.
The United States is hosting the World Cup again for the first time since 1994. The country will use iconic stadiums such as MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey) with a capacity of 78,576 spectators, which is the final venue, AT&T Stadium in Dallas, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Canada is hosting for the first time, with matches held at BC Place (Vancouver) and BMO Field (Toronto). Mexico is the first CONCACAF country to host the World Cup three times after 1970 and 1986, using Estadio Banorte (Mexico City), Estadio Akron (Guadalajara), and Estadio BBVA (Monterrey).
Participants and Qualification
With the expansion of the number of participants to 48 teams, FIFA distributed additional slots to all confederations. Europe received the largest addition with 16 direct slots, followed by Africa with 9 slots, Asia with 8 slots, and South America with 6 slots.
Several countries made history with their first appearances at the World Cup. Uzbekistan, Jordan, Cape Verde, and Curaçao succeeded in qualifying for the first time in history. Meanwhile, Norway returned to the world stage after being absent since 1998, and Scotland qualified for the first time since the same tournament.
Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, England, and Spain were among the favorite teams that secured their places in the final tournament through their respective qualification paths. Brazil extended its record as the only team that has never been absent from any World Cup edition.
Knockout Stage
Entering the knockout stage, the four top teams in the FIFA rankings succeeded in advancing to the semifinals for the first time in history. France, Argentina, Spain, and England occupied the last four, affirming the dominance of traditional football nations.
The first semifinal pits France against Spain at AT&T Stadium, Dallas, on July 15, 2026. The second semifinal pits England against Argentina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, on July 16, 2026.
France advanced to the semifinals by defeating Morocco in the quarterfinals. Although Morocco performed impressively throughout the tournament, France fully dominated that match. Argentina secured a place in the semifinals after defeating Switzerland in Kansas City.
The final is scheduled to take place on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey. The third-place match will be held the day before in Miami.
Impact and Response
The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams has drawn mixed responses. FIFA President Gianni Infantino considers this new format proven successful and to have brought a positive impact on the development of global football. According to him, more countries have the opportunity to realize the dream of appearing at the world's greatest event, and the tournament has shown increasingly even competition.
Infantino has also indicated that FIFA will consider further expansion to 64 teams for the 2030 edition. According to him, it is important to consider not only Europe and South America, but the entire world in the hosting of the World Cup.
The increase in the number of participants and matches has also demanded more complex physical preparation and player rotation strategies. A study in the journal Sports Medicine highlighted that this change affects teams' overall preparation.
Although it had drawn criticism because it was feared it would lower the quality of matches, the early development of the tournament has shown that competition remains competitive. Teams from various confederations have succeeded in scoring goals and earning points, indicating that the expansion of participants has provided benefits for the development of global football.
