AKB48 is a Japanese female idol group formed on December 8, 2005 by producer Yasushi Akimoto. The group's name is an abbreviation of Akihabara48, referring to the Akihabara district in Tokyo, the center of Japanese pop culture where the group is based. AKB48 is known as the pioneer of the "idol you can meet" concept, in which fans can watch the members' live performances at a dedicated theater on a regular basis.
History
The group originated from an audition held by Yasushi Akimoto in July 2005, which was attended by 7,924 teenage girls. From those thousands of participants, 45 people were selected as the initial members. AKB48 made its debut by releasing its first single, Sakura no Hanabiratachi, in February 2006. Since then, the group has grown rapidly and even once earned a Guinness World Records title as the "world's largest pop group".
AKB48 originally implemented a team system (Team A, Team K, Team B, Team 4, and Team 8) before that system was eventually abolished on October 17, 2023. In April 2023, Team 8 was declared inactive and all of its members joined the other existing teams.
Members
The lineup of AKB48 members often changes as members "graduate" from the group and are replaced by new members from auditions. This change has become one of the distinctive features of the AKB48 system. In April 2026, the number of AKB48 members was recorded at 51 people.
Generations and Recruitment System
AKB48 recruits members through auditions held periodically. Members are divided by generation, which indicates when they joined. The newest generations such as the 19th, 20th, and 21st generations continue to add new color to the group. The ongoing recruitment process allows AKB48 to keep renewing itself with talented young talent.
General Manager (Sosokan)
The leader or "general manager" of AKB48 and all of its sister groups is currently Narumi Kuranoo. She serves as the fourth-generation general manager after succeeding Mion Mukaichi. Mion Mukaichi herself was the third-generation general manager who graduated from the group in April 2026. In an interview in June 2026, Kuranoo expressed her desire to keep seeking a new form for AKB48 in an ever-changing era.

65th Single: Masaka no Confession
AKB48's 65th single, titled Masaka no Confession (意外の告白), was released on April 2, 2025. This single was the first release in AKB48's 20th anniversary year. The center position on this single was held by Yagi Azuki (八木愛月).
66th Single: Oh My Pumpkin!
The 66th single was released as AKB48's 20th anniversary single on August 13, 2025. This single was special because it featured legendary members from AKB48's early generations as well as members from international sister groups, including Shania Gracia from JKT48, who also joined as senbatsu. The music video for this single has also been released and received a warm reception from fans.
67th Single: Nagori Zakura
The 67th single, titled Nagori Zakura (名残り桜), was released on February 25, 2026. This single featured 16 senbatsu members led by AKB48's top-tier members.
68th Single: Suki-ish
AKB48's 68th single, titled Suki-ish (好きish), is scheduled for release on August 19, 2026. The single's title is a wordplay on "suki" (like) with the suffix "-ish", meaning "somewhat" or "kind of", so it can be interpreted as "kind of like" or "maybe like". This single has drawn attention because Ito Momoka (伊藤百花) from the 19th generation was entrusted as center for two consecutive singles, an achievement that last occurred about 12 years ago. The music video for this single has been viewed more than 8 million times in about three weeks since its release, showing positive momentum for the group.
Theater and Performances
AKB48 has a dedicated theater in Akihabara, Tokyo, which serves as the venue for the members' regular performances. The "idol you can meet" concept allows fans to watch the members' live performances regularly at this theater.
Yume no Pop Star (Dream Pop Star)
On August 7, 2026, AKB48 began a new theater performance titled Yume no Pop Star (夢のポップスター). This performance carries the theme of "singing ability" (kakuryoku) as its main focus, in which the members return to the basics of being idols, namely "singing and dancing". General Manager Kuranoo stated that through this performance, AKB48 wants to become "the best pop star that can captivate through singing and performance". This performance also serves as a reminder of AKB48's great dream of performing at Tokyo Dome.
AKB48 Group and Sister Groups
AKB48 has many sister groups both inside and outside Japan. Domestically, there are groups such as SKE48 (Nagoya), NMB48 (Osaka), HKT48 (Fukuoka), NGT48 (Niigata), and STU48 (a cruise ship). Outside Japan, AKB48 has formed a number of sister groups spread across various Asian countries.
International Sister Groups
AKB48's first international sister group is JKT48, based in Jakarta, Indonesia, formed in 2011. JKT48 became the pioneer for other international sister groups. After JKT48, AKB48 formed BNK48 in Bangkok, Thailand; MNL48 in Manila, the Philippines; TPE48 in Taipei, Taiwan (previously known as AKB48 Team TP, which officially changed its name to TPE48 on January 18, 2026); and CGM48 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The newest sister group is KLP48, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is AKB48's 10th international sister group. KLP48 officially debuted on August 18, 2024.
In addition, there is also Quadlips, which is the first international unit from the AKB48 Group involving members from various sister groups.
20th Anniversary
AKB48 celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025 with a series of spectacular concerts. From December 4 to 7, 2025, AKB48 held the AKB48 20th Year Live Tour 2025 at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo. The concert was held across 6 performances and attracted 49,000 fans. The climax on the final night featured 184 members, consisting of 48 active members and 135 former members who returned to perform, making it the largest concert in AKB48 history.
The moment that most shook fans was the return of the first-generation "Kami 7" (神7)—the seven most popular members from the AKB48 general election—in six of its seven members. The six members who appeared were Maeda Atsuko, Oshima Yuko, Takahashi Minami, Itano Tomomi, Shinoda Mariko, and Kojima Haruna. The one member who did not attend was Watanabe Mayu, who has retired from the entertainment world. Oshima Yuko's appearance was especially special because she had just given birth to her second child in May 2025. Maeda Atsuko also wept on stage.
20th Anniversary Single
The 66th single Oh My Pumpkin! was released as part of AKB48's 20th anniversary celebration. This single featured not only active members but also legendary former members and members from international sister groups, making it a special tribute celebrating AKB48's two-decade journey.
Impact and Legacy
AKB48 has become a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The "idol you can meet" concept they introduced has changed the landscape of the idol industry in Japan and inspired many idol groups throughout Asia. The general election system (sousenkyo) introduced in 2009, in which fans vote for their favorite members to become senbatsu on the next single, has become a model widely imitated by other idol groups.
Entering 2026, AKB48 continues to show its presence by releasing new singles and holding innovative theater performances. General Manager Kuranoo expressed her belief that "a good wave is coming" for AKB48, with the goal of performing at Tokyo Dome and becoming a "pop star" known to the wider public.
