AKB48

AKB48 is a Japanese female idol group formed on December 8, 2005 by producer Yasushi Akimoto. The group's name is an abbreviation of Akihabara48, referring to the Akihabara district in Tokyo, the center of Japanese pop culture where the group is based. AKB48 is known as the pioneer of the "idol you can meet" concept, in which fans can watch the members' live performances at a dedicated theater on a regular basis.

History

The group originated from an audition held by Yasushi Akimoto in July 2005, which was attended by 7,924 teenage girls. From those thousands of participants, 45 people were selected as the initial members. AKB48 made its debut by releasing its first single, Sakura no Hanabiratachi, in February 2006. Since then, the group has grown rapidly and even once earned a Guinness World Records title as the "world's largest pop group".

AKB48 originally implemented a team system (Team A, Team K, Team B, Team 4, and Team 8) before that system was eventually abolished on October 17, 2023. In April 2023, Team 8 was declared inactive and all of its members joined the other existing teams.

Members

The lineup of AKB48 members often changes as members "graduate" from the group and are replaced by new members from auditions. This change has become one of the distinctive features of the AKB48 system. In April 2026, the number of AKB48 members was recorded at 51 people.

Generations and Recruitment System

AKB48 recruits members through auditions held periodically. Members are divided by generation, which indicates when they joined. The newest generations such as the 19th, 20th, and 21st generations continue to add new color to the group. The ongoing recruitment process allows AKB48 to keep renewing itself with talented young talent.

General Manager (Sosokan)

The leader or "general manager" of AKB48 and all of its sister groups is currently Narumi Kuranoo. She serves as the fourth-generation general manager after succeeding Mion Mukaichi. Mion Mukaichi herself was the third-generation general manager who graduated from the group in April 2026. In an interview in June 2026, Kuranoo expressed her desire to keep seeking a new form for AKB48 in an ever-changing era.

65th Single: Masaka no Confession

AKB48's 65th single, titled Masaka no Confession (意外の告白), was released on April 2, 2025. This single was the first release in AKB48's 20th anniversary year. The center position on this single was held by Yagi Azuki (八木愛月).

66th Single: Oh My Pumpkin!

The 66th single was released as AKB48's 20th anniversary single on August 13, 2025. This single was special because it featured legendary members from AKB48's early generations as well as members from international sister groups, including Shania Gracia from JKT48, who also joined as senbatsu. The music video for this single has also been released and received a warm reception from fans.

67th Single: Nagori Zakura

The 67th single, titled Nagori Zakura (名残り桜), was released on February 25, 2026. This single featured 16 senbatsu members led by AKB48's top-tier members.

68th Single: Suki-ish

AKB48's 68th single, titled Suki-ish (好きish), is scheduled for release on August 19, 2026. The single's title is a wordplay on "suki" (like) with the suffix "-ish", meaning "somewhat" or "kind of", so it can be interpreted as "kind of like" or "maybe like". This single has drawn attention because Ito Momoka (伊藤百花) from the 19th generation was entrusted as center for two consecutive singles, an achievement that last occurred about 12 years ago. The music video for this single has been viewed more than 8 million times in about three weeks since its release, showing positive momentum for the group.

Theater and Performances

AKB48 has a dedicated theater in Akihabara, Tokyo, which serves as the venue for the members' regular performances. The "idol you can meet" concept allows fans to watch the members' live performances regularly at this theater.

Yume no Pop Star (Dream Pop Star)

On August 7, 2026, AKB48 began a new theater performance titled Yume no Pop Star (夢のポップスター). This performance carries the theme of "singing ability" (kakuryoku) as its main focus, in which the members return to the basics of being idols, namely "singing and dancing". General Manager Kuranoo stated that through this performance, AKB48 wants to become "the best pop star that can captivate through singing and performance". This performance also serves as a reminder of AKB48's great dream of performing at Tokyo Dome.

AKB48 Group and Sister Groups

AKB48 has many sister groups both inside and outside Japan. Domestically, there are groups such as SKE48 (Nagoya), NMB48 (Osaka), HKT48 (Fukuoka), NGT48 (Niigata), and STU48 (a cruise ship). Outside Japan, AKB48 has formed a number of sister groups spread across various Asian countries.

International Sister Groups

AKB48's first international sister group is JKT48, based in Jakarta, Indonesia, formed in 2011. JKT48 became the pioneer for other international sister groups. After JKT48, AKB48 formed BNK48 in Bangkok, Thailand; MNL48 in Manila, the Philippines; TPE48 in Taipei, Taiwan (previously known as AKB48 Team TP, which officially changed its name to TPE48 on January 18, 2026); and CGM48 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The newest sister group is KLP48, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is AKB48's 10th international sister group. KLP48 officially debuted on August 18, 2024.

In addition, there is also Quadlips, which is the first international unit from the AKB48 Group involving members from various sister groups.

20th Anniversary

AKB48 celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025 with a series of spectacular concerts. From December 4 to 7, 2025, AKB48 held the AKB48 20th Year Live Tour 2025 at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo. The concert was held across 6 performances and attracted 49,000 fans. The climax on the final night featured 184 members, consisting of 48 active members and 135 former members who returned to perform, making it the largest concert in AKB48 history.

The moment that most shook fans was the return of the first-generation "Kami 7" (神7)—the seven most popular members from the AKB48 general election—in six of its seven members. The six members who appeared were Maeda Atsuko, Oshima Yuko, Takahashi Minami, Itano Tomomi, Shinoda Mariko, and Kojima Haruna. The one member who did not attend was Watanabe Mayu, who has retired from the entertainment world. Oshima Yuko's appearance was especially special because she had just given birth to her second child in May 2025. Maeda Atsuko also wept on stage.

20th Anniversary Single

The 66th single Oh My Pumpkin! was released as part of AKB48's 20th anniversary celebration. This single featured not only active members but also legendary former members and members from international sister groups, making it a special tribute celebrating AKB48's two-decade journey.

Impact and Legacy

AKB48 has become a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. The "idol you can meet" concept they introduced has changed the landscape of the idol industry in Japan and inspired many idol groups throughout Asia. The general election system (sousenkyo) introduced in 2009, in which fans vote for their favorite members to become senbatsu on the next single, has become a model widely imitated by other idol groups.

Entering 2026, AKB48 continues to show its presence by releasing new singles and holding innovative theater performances. General Manager Kuranoo expressed her belief that "a good wave is coming" for AKB48, with the goal of performing at Tokyo Dome and becoming a "pop star" known to the wider public.

JKT48

JKT48 is an Indonesian idol group that is the first sister group of AKB48 outside Japan. Formed in 2011 by producer Yasushi Akimoto, JKT48 carries the "idol you can meet" concept, meaning idols who can be met directly by their fans. Based at JKT48 Theater, located in the FX Sudirman area of South Jakarta, the group has become one of Indonesia's pop culture phenomena, with dozens of members from various generations and dozens of singles released.

History

The formation of JKT48 was first announced on September 11, 2011 at an AKB48 event held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan. After going through a series of audition processes, JKT48's first generation was introduced to the public on November 2, 2011. JKT48's presence in the Indonesian music industry attracted wide attention because it arrived at a time when music listeners in the country were fond of boybands and girlbands.

Throughout its journey, JKT48 has gone through various eras and transformations. In 2018, the group began to reorganize by introducing a new concept. Entering 2026, JKT48 entered a new chapter with the launch of the JKT48 Fight! era, which marked the return of the team system while also bringing a new spirit of competition among the members.

The JKT48 Fight! Era

In April 2026, JKT48 officially marked the start of a new era under the title JKT48 Fight!. This era revived the team format that had been inactive, with three new teams formed: Team Passion, Team Dream, and Team Love. The three teams successfully held their debut performances (shonichi) with their respective special setlists.

Team Passion opened the series of performances with explosive energy through the setlist "Passion 200%" under the leadership of Christy (7th Generation) as Global Center. Team Dream, led by Marsha (9th Generation), presented a dreamy yet powerful atmosphere in the setlist "Dream Bakudan". Meanwhile, Team Love, commanded by Fiony (8th Generation), offered a sweet and love-filled concept in the setlist "Itadaki Love".

Each team has a contrasting yet complementary color and musical identity. To further assert each team's presence in the digital music industry, JKT48 Fight also released three different music videos (MVs). Team Passion released the MV "Dekat Namun Jauh", Team Dream arrived with the MV "Wakaka People", and Team Love launched the MV "12 Seconds".

Management's decision to revive the team format was warmly welcomed by fans because it was seen as giving members from various generations more room to shine and strengthening bonds among fellow members.

Team System and Leadership

At JKT48's 14th anniversary concert titled "THE FIRST SNOW", held at Indonesia Arena, Jakarta, on December 21, 2025, management officially appointed Freya Jayawardana as the new Captain of JKT48. Freya, a 7th Generation member, replaced Shania Gracia, who ended her career at JKT48 after working for more than 11 years.

The announcement was delivered directly by JKT48 Theater General Manager Melody Laksani at the end of the event. In her first speech as captain, Freya admitted that the responsibility was very heavy, but she was ready to give her best for the group. In her new position, Freya is responsible for leading rehearsals, serving as a communication bridge between members and management, and being the main face representing JKT48 at various events. Freya's appointment was seen as the right step given her more than seven years of experience in the group as well as her wide popularity, not only among loyal fans but also the general public.

Members and Generations

JKT48 has a continuous regeneration system by introducing new generations periodically. As of 2026, JKT48 has had 14 generations of members. The newest generation, the 14th Generation, was officially introduced on February 14, 2026 during the "Sambil Menggandeng Erat Tanganku" setlist performance at JKT48 Theater.

A total of 11 14th Generation trainees were introduced to the public, consisting of Afera Thalia (Fera, 13 years old, Bogor), Carissa Dini (Carissa, 14 years old, Jakarta), Christabella Bonita (Bella, 14 years old, Tangerang), Fahira Putri (Fahira, 13 years old, Jakarta), Fatimah Azzahra (Rara, 15 years old, Depok), Heidi Suyangga (Heidi, 17 years old, Jakarta), Maegan Jovanka (Maegan, 14 years old, Depok), Maxine Faye Lee (Maxine, 14 years old, Jakarta), Putry Jazyta (Jazy, 14 years old, Bogor), Ralyne Van Irwan (Ralyne, 14 years old, Medan), and Sona Kalyana (Sona, 14 years old, Jakarta). With the addition of these 11 new members, the total number of JKT48 trainees reached 20 people, because there were nine 13th Generation members who were still trainees.

Works and Singles

JKT48 has released dozens of singles throughout its career, most of which are adaptations of AKB48 songs rearranged in Indonesian. As of 2026, JKT48 has entered its 27th single release.

The 27th single, titled "Andai 'Ku Bukan Idola", was released on February 4, 2026. The song is an adaptation of AKB48's 62nd single titled "Idol Nanka Janakattara", released on September 27, 2023. This single marked the start of the JKT48 Fight! era in 2026.

The song "Andai 'Ku Bukan Idola" was performed by a 12-member Senbatsu formation, with Fiony Alveria entrusted as center for the first time in her JKT48 career. The Senbatsu lineup consisted of Jessica Chandra, Marsha Lenathea, Mutiara Azzahra, Kathrina Irene, Freya Jayawardana, Angelina Christy, Gita Sekar Andarini, Grace Octaviani, Michelle Alexandra, Febriola Sinambela, Fiony Alveria, and Greesella Adhalia.

The song tells the story of an idol's dilemma of harboring feelings of love but having to hold back because of responsibility toward her public image. The theme of "what if I were not an idol" makes the song feel human and close to fans' feelings. The music video for the song also featured Yui Oguri, one of AKB48's popular members, and some of its footage was shot in Japan, including at AKB48 Theater.

In addition to the 27th single, JKT48 also released other singles in 2026, including "12 Seconds", "WAKAKA PEOPLE", and "Kadang Aku Lupa".

JKT48 Request Hour 2026

One of the annual events anticipated by fans is JKT48 Request Hour, an event in which fans choose 40 favorite songs from the JKT48 catalog through a voting system. JKT48 Request Hour 2026 was held at Tennis Indoor Senayan, Jakarta, on June 13, 2026.

The song "Fajar Sang Idola" (or "Idol no Yoake") took first place in the event. The song was performed by 12 JKT48 members with Jemima Evodie from the 13th Generation as center. As a prize for the song that took the top position, "Fajar Sang Idola" received the opportunity to have an official music video made. The MV was finally released on August 16, 2026. Second place in Request Hour 2026 was taken by "Benang Sari, Putik, dan Kupu-Kupu Malam (NEW ERA Version)", while third place was won by "Si Bintang Jatuh yang Egois".

Member Graduations

As with idol groups in general, JKT48 also experiences member turnover through the graduation process. Several members announced their graduations throughout 2026.

Shania Gracia, JKT48 captain from the 3rd Generation who had worked for more than 11 years, held her graduation ceremony at the "THE FIRST SNOW" concert, which was also JKT48's 14th anniversary celebration, on December 20, 2025.

Amanda Puspita Sukma Mulyadewi announced her graduation in October 2025 and officially held her graduation ceremony on March 29, 2026. Chelsea Davina Norman, an 11th Generation member, officially graduated on May 30, 2026. Cathleen Nixie officially graduated from JKT48 on August 15, 2026 through the "Cara Meminum Ramune" performance with Team Love, becoming the first member of that team to complete her service. Alya Amanda, an 11th Generation member, also announced her graduation in 2026.

Theater and Performances

JKT48 Theater, located at FX Sudirman, South Jakarta, is the venue for the group's regular performances. Theater performances are held almost every day with different setlists according to the team appearing. Since the JKT48 Fight! era began, each team has had its own special setlist performed in rotation. Theater performances can also be watched through paid livestreams on the IDN Live platform.

Impact and Influence

As Indonesia's first idol group since 2011, JKT48 has had a significant influence on the country's entertainment industry. JKT48's presence not only introduced Japanese-style idol culture to Indonesian society, but also created an active and loyal fan (wota) ecosystem. The group has also produced a number of members who have gone on to broader careers in entertainment, including acting, modeling, and the digital world.

JKT48 also actively interacts with fans through various digital platforms, including the Showroom app used for members' livestreams. In 2026, JKT48 also has a paid broadcast channel on IDN Live for theater performances.
