Rumi's Phenomenon

Rumi's Phenomenon (るみちゃんの事象, Rumi's Phenomenon), also known by the English title Rumi's Phenomenon, is a Japanese school comedy manga series written and illustrated by Katsunori Hara. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine from March 7, 2011 to April 6, 2015. The story centers on a student named Rumi Ikuno and her innocent daily life, which often causes chaos and confusion for the people around her.

Synopsis

The manga's story focuses on Rumi Ikuno, a second-year transfer student at Hanagaoka Private Girls' Academy. Rumi lives her school life simply and without burden, appearing unaware that she is often the source of various problems and strange incidents that confuse others.

Rumi's life is depicted as a very strange life, in which her presence often triggers situations that feel irritating to the people around her, but on the other hand are also sometimes regarded as unexpected entertainment. Her unique lifestyle and her simple, or perhaps insensitive, attitude become the main cause of the various "phenomena" that occur around her.

Although the main synopsis is very simple, fans and some sources report that the manga also includes side stories, such as one short story titled Rumi-chan Zenya: Rumi-chan ga, Ima no Rumi-chan ni Naru Sukoshi Mae no Ohanashi that was included in volume 4. This short story likely tells of Rumi's past before she became the person she is now.

Media

Manga

The main series Rumi-chan no Jishō was published in 7 tankōbon volumes (compilation books) by Shogakukan, with a total of 181 chapters. The manga is targeted at seinen readers, a demographic aimed at young adult men, which is reflected in its storytelling style and its publication in Big Comic Spirits magazine.

Television Drama Series

In 2015, Rumi-chan no Jishō was adapted into a live-action television drama series broadcast on MBS and TBS stations. This adaptation is unique because it was combined with an adaptation of another popular manga, Tonari no Seki-kun (My Neighbor Seki) by Takuma Morishige, in a single program titled Tonari no Seki-kun to Rumi-chan no Jishō.

The decision to combine these two manga was based on several factors. Both are school-set comedies and, most interestingly, both of their main female characters are named Rumi. This was regarded as a "strange destiny" by Morishige himself. The program consists of 8 episodes, each 30 minutes long, divided into two segments for each manga.

For the Rumi-chan no Jishō segment, the lead role of Rumi Ikuno was played by Shiori Tomita, a singer and variety show host. This segment was directed by Shō Tsukikawa and Yasuyuki Fukasako, with a script written by Tsukikawa. Other supporting cast members included Erina Mano as Yoshida Kumi, Yukino Kishii as Naho, and several other actors. Meanwhile, the Tonari no Seki-kun segment starred Yūtarō Watanabe as Toshinari Seki and Fumika Shimizu as Rumi Yokoi.

Themes and Style

Overall, Rumi-chan no Jishō presents a story about the life of a girl who is "strange" yet "hard to hate". Rumi is depicted as a student who lives a simple life, but without realizing it becomes the center of various problems around her. The main theme is everyday comedy centered on the unique personality of the main character. The story is explored in the form of short chapters, with a total of 181 chapters spread across 7 volumes, showing that this manga has a plot focused on light and entertaining slices of everyday life.

Reception

Although it does not have significant ranking or score data on aggregator sites such as MyAnimeList, its live-action drama adaptation received a score of 7.2 to 7.3 from around 200 users on MyDramaList, indicating a fairly positive reception from viewers who have watched it. The manga has a relatively niche popularity, with more than 100 members on MyAnimeList in the last recorded data.

Although it is not as well known as its companion manga, Tonari no Seki-kun, Rumi-chan no Jishō still has a place of its own as a unique school comedy that succeeded in attracting fans, even enough to receive a live-action adaptation on Japanese national television. This shows that the work has an appeal of its own among readers and viewers who enjoy light stories with unusual characters.

My Neighbor Seki

My Neighbor Seki (Japanese: となりの関くん, "Seki Next to Me"), known in its English-language release as My Neighbor Seki, is a school-life comedy manga and anime series by Takuma Morishige. The series tells the everyday story of a student named Rumi Yokoi who is always disturbed by the creative and unusual antics of her desk neighbor, Toshinari Seki, who spends class time on various elaborate games on his desk without ever being caught by the teacher.

The story centers on Rumi, who tries hard to pay attention to the lesson, but always fails because her curiosity about the games Seki makes is continually provoked. This creates a unique and funny dynamic in which Rumi is often emotionally involved in those games, trying to sabotage them or even unconsciously joining in playing them, while Seki remains focused on his "work" with a serious expression. The series is liked for its clever visual humor and its ability to present an engaging story from only the narrow space of a school desk.

Background and Publication

The Tonari no Seki-kun manga first appeared as a one-shot story in August 2010 in Media Factory's Comic Flapper magazine. The success of this short story later prompted the start of regular serialization in the November 2010 issue of the same magazine. To date, the series is still running and has produced dozens of tankōbon volumes. In North America, the manga is licensed and published by Vertical.

In 2020, a spin-off manga titled My Neighbor Seki-kun Junior began serialization in the same magazine. This story focuses on the future of Rumi and Seki, in which they are married and have a two-year-old son named Makuru, exploring a new generation within the same unique dynamic. Serialization of this spin-off lasted until May 2023.

Main Characters

Rumi Yokoi (横井 るみ) is the protagonist and main narrator of the series. As a diligent student, she is always determined to focus on the lesson, but her high curiosity makes her continually distracted by Seki. Her reactions to Seki's games often become the main source of humor in the story. In the future, she is married to Seki and blessed with a son named Makuru.

Toshinari Seki (関 俊成) is the eponymous character and the center of all the chaos. He is a quiet and mysterious student who has a high dedication to making elaborate games on his desk, ranging from arranging dominos from erasers and making stamps from rubber erasers to directing melodramatic shogi dramas. Seki very rarely speaks, and he has a desk box arranged so neatly that only he can put it back in order. Although he appears innocent, he sometimes shows a cruel side, such as when he deliberately destroys a toy he made himself if he feels disturbed. In the spin-off, he marries Rumi and becomes the father of Makuru.

Adapted Media

Animation

The anime adaptation of Tonari no Seki-kun was produced by studio Shin-Ei Animation and directed by Yūji Mutoh. Before the TV series aired, an OVA (Original Video Animation) was released on January 4, 2014, bundled with the limited edition of the fifth manga volume. This OVA contains two episodes titled "Bo-taoshi" and "Neko".

The television anime series then began airing in Japan on TV Tokyo and AT-X from January 5 to May 25, 2014. The series consists of 21 episodes with a duration of around 8 minutes each, a short format that fits the comedy style of this series. Outside Japan, the series was simulcast by Crunchyroll under the title Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time. The license for release in North America is held by Sentai Filmworks, which released an English-language dubbed version in 2020.

The opening theme for this series is titled "Meiwaku Spectacle" (迷惑スペクタクル), sung by Kana Hanazawa (the voice of Rumi Yokoi), while the ending theme is "Set Them Free" by Akira Jimbo. The music for the anime was composed by Akifumi Tada.

Live-Action Drama

In addition to the anime adaptation, Tonari no Seki-kun was also adapted into a live-action drama series that aired on MBS and TBS from July 27 to September 14, 2015. The drama series consists of 8 episodes and stars Fumika Shimizu as Rumi Yokoi and Yutaro Watanabe as Toshinari Seki.
